Captain Dario Leccese

Captain Dario Leccese was born August 31th, 1963 in Taranto, a small town in the southern part of Italy where he attended his primary and secondary education. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1986 achieving a Maritime and Naval Sciences degree from the University of Pisa, Italy. He attended the National Defence College in Rome from 2001 to 2002 with a MBA in Strategy. He was promoted Captain on July 1, 2008.


He spent most of his career at sea. From 1986 until 1998 he served on board frigates and Italian Cruiser Vittorio Veneto as Artillery and Missile Officer, as well as Operations  and Principal Warfare Officer.  In 1995-1997, he was assigned as Weapon Officer and as Head of Operations Branch on board ITS Luigi Durand de la Penne. In 2001 he was the XO of ITS Mimbelli.
As a Lieutenant, he was the Commanding Officer of ITS Simeto from 1994-1995. As a Commander he assumed Command of ITS Maestrale and in 2010, as Captain, he commanded the I Fregates Flotilla in Taranto (8 ships).


CAPT Leccese has also served in a number of shore appointments both in Italy and abroad. From 1997 to 2000, he joined the Horizon Project in London (Tripartite Joint Project Office) and in Paris, when the original project became Binational (UPO-BPH Horizon) In 2004-2006 he served at CINCNAV/COMEDCENT as Current Operation Branch Head and from 2006 to 2010 he was the Project Officer for the Italian Navy General Staff for new ships (Cavour, Horizon and FREMM projects). In 2006 he was the ITN LO at CENTCOM (Tampa, FL) and he recently he was assigned as Trasformation Network Branch Head at ACT (Norfolk, VA).
Since 2014 he is the Dual Use & External Partnership BH and responsible for Foreign Navy crew Training in the Italian Navy General Staff.



Major Decorations: Silver Medal for extended Command; Distinguished Navy Service Award (25 years); Commendations in recognition of NATO and WEU service patrolling in the Adriatic Sea to the respect of UN sanctions against Former Yugoslavia (Sharp Fence/Guard operation); Honor Medal (2nd degree) for sea duty; Italian and EU Commemorative Cross for peace-keeping mission of the Italian Armed Forces in Former Yugoslavia, Commemorative Crosses for taking part to Iran-Irak war, Irak-Kuwait war (Desert Shield/Desert Storm), and Enduring Freedom Operations, Saudi Arabia commemorative cross for taking part to Iran-Irak War.

Courses: Advanced Corse for Italian Navy General Staff Officers, Italian Naval School Command, National Defence College - 4th Course, Prince 2 (Programme Management course).

He speaks fluently English, French, and some Italian.
